Hi.

Welcome to Bumblemom. As my name suggestions, I’m bumbling along as best I can as I navigate a new culture, kids, and style.

Grocery Haul #2

Grocery Haul #2

It’s time for another grocery haul to give you an idea of how prices can change and a view at some different food on offer in New Zealand. If you haven’t checked out Haul #1, you may be interested in some of the different staples and their costs.

I should note that I went back to the same grocery store, a New World. It is one of the two average grocery store chains that are everywhere in New Zealand. (The other being a chain called Countdown). There are lots of different options for food, however. Check out this post to learn more about both the low end and the high end choices.

There are a few notes that I should make about this shopping trip. The first is about the ice. My husband loves iced tea and ice in his drinks in general. Unlike in the US, iced drinks are not a given throughout New Zealand. Also, while there are some refrigerators with ice and water dispensers, they are a lot less common here than in America. Unfortunately, our house came with a refrigerator that is sans ice dispenser, so I am constantly getting bags of ice to meet the hubby’s insatiable ice habit.

The second point is about the bluff salmon. Y’all, there is no other way to put it but this salmon puts every piece of salmon I’ve ever had in the United States to shame. It is beyond delicious and seems to be available all year round. $37.99 per kilo (or about US$12.09/lb) is a pretty high price for it, too. Usually it is on sale for less. I wouldn’t normally purchase at this high of a price, but there was a special request for it.

The final note is about organic items. I’ve mentioned this before, but I don’t feel like buying all things organic is necessary in New Zealand like I did in the United States. As long as I am buying local produce, I have a pretty high level of confidence in the quality of the food. There’s also significantly fewer organic options, so I’m not sure I could buy all organic here even if I felt compelled to. With that being said, I buy organic when it is readily available and looks good. Some habits are hard to break.
