Hi.

Welcome to Bumblemom. As my name suggestions, I’m bumbling along as best I can as I navigate a new culture, kids, and style.

Grocery Haul #4

Grocery Haul #4

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted a grocery haul, and now that the seasons have changed, the prices and availability of items has changed, too. For an overview of what we’ve experienced, check out my initial grocery shopping post here. Specifically, I’ve noticed a big change in the produce section. No longer are there inexpensive courgettes (zucchini) which used to be $5.99/kg. They’re now twice that. Fresh berries are all but gone. There’s no stone fruit. The prices of cucumbers, capsicums (bell peppers), and tomatoes have all gone up - by just about 100%. As such, we’re slowly changing our diets to be more winter-friendly. We’re eating more root vegetables, legumes, and leafy greens.

And while the availability of produce has changed, the quality of what is available has not. What’s out in the stores looks good and tastes even better. There are some delicious apple varieties that I haven’t seen before. One new favorite is the Lemonade apple. It’s worth a try if you see them in the store! There’s also a ridiculous amount of persimmons around. They’re currently selling for $3.99/kg, but our neighbors dropped off a huge bag from their fruit tree to enjoy so I haven’t needed to buy any from the grocery store.

The change in availability is forcing me to explore new recipes and menu items. It’s forcing me out of my comfort zone which is a good thing. My husband is particularly excited because he thinks this means we’re going to start making soups. I’m learning about his previously unknown soup obsession. Wish me luck with that one!
