Five Parent's Night Out Dinner Spots
A reader recently asked for some good dinner spot recommendations. Places where couples could go for that all-to-rare night out without kids when you want to have an extended adult conversation but don’t have to try too hard. I’ve posted a handful of restaurant recs that are great establishments to try, but there are a number of places we go that I haven’t shared. So in alphabetical order, schedule a babysitter and check out:
Baduzzi - This lively spot in the Wharf has lots of character and a great menu full of Italian staples. The wine list is one of the few I’ve found that isn’t all about New Zealand wines - a nice change from the standards. This is a place that definitely makes me feel like I’m an adult and out for dinner, and yes, the meatballs live up to the hype.
La Fourchette - A neighbourhood French place that is consistently delicious? Yes, please! The rotating, seasonal menu helps keep things fresh, and the French staff keep things authentic. On the weekends there are often jazz singers or other musicians keeping things Parisian - cool. Side note: on Sunday evenings, kids meals are free with the purchase of an adult meal. We’ll periodically take this kids on Sundays so we can enjoy delicious, adult food, but we don’t go here for a date night on Sundays because those are the nights I don’t want to be surrounded by other people’s kids.
Lupino - Scott Denning, formerly of The Grove, set up this modern Italian bistro in Mission Bay, and it is a huge hit. So much so that it was packed on a Tuesday night when we last ate there. Make sure you book reservations ahead of time. The food is upscale while the atmosphere is relaxed and a little on the noisy side. Definitely try the duck liver parfait as it is one of the best I’ve ever had.
Meadow - My husband and I have a running joke with the owner of Meadow that we show up for dinner every time there is some sort of school parent/teacher function and we want a good meal in an environment that we can talk in. This is a neighbourhood bistro with good food and a relaxed atmosphere. They have a full bar and can make a top notch negroni.
Ortolana - Most people heading to the Britomart will want to eat at the very trendy, very popular Amano. My choice in the Britomart is Ortolana. Both restaurants focus on serving local foods, but at Ortolana, the food is better, the atmosphere is a little more relaxed and civilized, and I feel like I can have an actual conversation without yelling over someone six inches away from me.
Have you got any other recommendations to share? I’d love to know your favorite dinner spots around town!
